Barbie had very high brand awareness, but people just weren't buying into her. The brand had been too focused on marketing the latest products, she explains, and needed to overhaul its strategy to focus on Barbie's brand purpose: that girls can imagine their future selves through the doll. They were questioning Barbie as a positive role model against the backdrop of societal change that was happening." "We were hearing from parents, mums in particular who grew up with and played with Barbie were hesitating about buying Barbie for their own daughters. But when we listened to the social sentiment, we didn't like the playback," McKnight says. "The brand has never seen a dramatic decline. In the third quarter to 30 September, Mattel reported a 10% increase in sales of Barbie – outpacing its wider doll portfolio, which grew 5%. Nothing about this overhaul has been easy, though. Manufacturing and design had to ensure all new doll shapes could fit within existing Barbie playsets, such as houses and vehicles. It even counts an astrophysicist, builder, beekeeper, political candidate and entomologist among the range, as well as a more physically diverse range of dolls featuring different skin tones, hair fibres, body sizes and body types, including a wheelchair user.īarbie is being given a 21st-century makeover – even if she is still, for the most part, unattainably beautiful.ĭiversifying Barbie looks to be paying off. 'Parents were questioning Barbie as a positive role model against the backdrop of societal change' Today, the range includes career dolls – parents can snap up anything from a judge to a news anchor to an astronaut. Following a 20% drop in sales between 20, brand owner Mattel overhauled the Barbie collection to focus on a more diverse and aspirational range of dolls. Barbie has had to take steps to address this. Due to their relationship, Sawa slowly gains the emotional strength to escape from her guardians to set out on her own. Sawa's assassinations are famous among the police for her use of special bullets that explode inside the body after piercing the skin.Įventually, Sawa meets a fellow assassin named Oburi, who is of a similar age, and a bond quickly forms between them. Subsequently, over the years, she kills whomever she is ordered to, including corrupt police officers and corporate fat cats. Sawa is an assassin, who the corrupt detectives make kill an alleged rapist of young girls. Akai also gave her a pair of crystal earrings, each one allegedly containing the blood of one of her parents. Akai has had a sexual relationship with Sawa for the duration of his guardianship. The detectives investigating the crime, Akai and Kanie, are her guardians. Sawa kills him, and the old lady dies of a heart attack sometime later, after feeling around for her glasses in the bloody aftermath. When the film opens, Sawa is on a date with a celebrity, but he begins yelling at an old lady, who had rebuked him for promiscuous ways, being on a date with such a young girl. Her parents are the victims of a gory double murder. Kite revolves around a schoolgirl named Sawa who is orphaned in her early teens. However, subsequent releases, including all three DVD releases in the United States, have edited the OVA into a film. Two 35-minute episodes were released on VHS on February 25 and October 25, 1998, respectively. Kite, known as A Kite ( Japanese: A カイト) in Japan, is a Japanese original video animation written and directed by Yasuomi Umetsu. Denver is a straight shot from the Northwest. You said there was no banking or turning, that means you did not land on the main North/South runways, you landed on the diagonal. Just as you crossed over I-40, and if you look to the other side, if you are looking straight to the Northeast, you will see downtown. The NW to SE route could be plausible, but flying in so many times to WR I don't think it's the case. When you are looking out of the window on the right hand side, if you are coming in on the NW/SE diagonal, it would make you seem to be due looking due West, where in reality you are looking due Southwest. It sure seemed like we were bearing directly South. No banking/turning prior to arrival that I remember and I saw all the bldgs from the West side of the airport area that I recognized. Then about a minute later we were on the ground at WR. Once the lights were out of view, I looked across the plane (perceived as East) and saw DT and Devon Tower as we crossed I-40. ICAO guidance requires that runway lighting shall not be operated if a runway is not in use for landing, take-off. Other types of lighting may also be provided. This is referred to as Edge Lighting, Threshold Lighting and Runway End Lighting. The white lights that appear to shoot toward the runway are called sequenced flashing. All runways licensed for night use must have lighting which at least defines the extent of the runway. Advises vehicles and pedestrians to vacate runways immediately. Many professional floor installation companies charge a minimum price to make a project worth their time and will charge a reasonable fee per additional square foot on top of that estimate. The size of the space that is going to be refinished also makes a big difference in terms of price. Keep in mind that concrete overlays need to be sealed, and additional floor coatings such as a glossy epoxy finish can increase costs. A simple smooth overlay will be less expensive than a custom-stamped overlay. The average cost of a concrete overlay is anywhere from $3 to $10 a square foot, depending on the type of overlay you choose. The type of overlay you choose will also change the overall project cost. Some floors need to be polished or repaired, so resurfacing costs will increase the overall concrete overlay cost per square foot. Consider the current condition of your concrete floor, and how much prep work will be needed before the overlay can be poured. You can choose from several finishes including smooth, stamped, and colored concrete, depending on what aesthetic you have in mind for any given room or area.īefore you get started, there are a few factors that will affect the overall project cost. Whether you want to conceal minor cracks on your garage floor or spruce up your patio with a new design, concrete overlays are a great investment that pay off in the long term. Concrete overlays can be micro-thin or up to two inches thick and some types are specially formulated to self-level and smooth out cracks and blemishes on an existing slab of concrete.Ĭoncrete overlays are designed to be very durable and have the added benefit of extending the lifespan of old concrete floors. Step 6: Once the overlay and stain have dried and cured, and no alterations or adjustments are needed, the surface is coated with a sealer for added shine and protection.A concrete overlay consists of concrete combined with sand, polymer resins, and other additives which are then poured over an existing concrete floor. Step 5: If the customer asks for a colored concrete overlay, staining is done at this stage to achieve that colored concrete look. Once completely stamped, the overlay is left to cure for a day or two. Pros need to work on this quickly before the concrete dries up. The overlay must be in a condition good enough for the stamp mat to leave an imprint. Step 4: The imprinting process is quite time-sensitive. Step 3: The overlay is mixed and then applied on the old concrete driveway, patio, pool deck, or surface. Step 2: If the slab is found to be eligible for an overlay, it is washed and dried. If there are skin-deep issues, a concrete replacement might be the most practical solution The surface must also be raw enough for the overlay to adhere effectively. It is important for the slab to be in good condition to prevent future problems. Step 1: The space that needs updating or restoring is first evaluated. So you, as a customer, would understand the process, here is a brief look at how stamped concrete overlay is installed: Proper installation calls for the appropriate tools and equipment. Although simple and easy, it must be properly installed, and only a pro can do that effectively. Overlays require minimal time and energy to install. Pavers and bricks require a tremendous amount of time to put each individual piece in its rightful place.
At this point I then have a) an edited selects folder, and b) everything else without duplicates. When they’re done I go back to PM and delete all the tagged NEF versions. I’ll load a preset for all or do a group edit then quickly go through and fine tune individually.ĥ) With all of the images selected in ACR I then write them to DNG (with fast load data) in a new Selects sub-folder for that shoot. I find ACR is faster than Lightroom so this offers further time saving. Again, very fast.Ĥ) With all tagged selected I select edit which brings me into ACR. I’ve abandoned rejects selection at this point.ģ) Isolate just the tagged files and refine metadata for each. What I’ve ended up doing is a multi-stage process…ġ) Use PM to import card to computer, writing custom metadata at the time including use of variables for auto captioning.Ģ) Rip through just like in your video, but I tag my picks and rank 5-stars separately for the favorites. And as you indicate in the video the metadata elements are well beyond LR as well and again contribute to the speed factor using Variables in the meta process lets you easily create captions and headings from other meta fields without duplicating work. I’ve recently adopted PM for youth sports photography because of the speed element. Here’s the link to the NAPP Member website but you’ll have to sign in to see the code. NAPP members get a discount on Photo Mechanic. But trust me, I talk to plenty of wedding, portrait, landscape and street photographers out there that need (or simply just want) to go through their photos extremely fast at times, and this is a great way to do that. As I said in the video, if you watch this and think “But can’t Lightroom do all of that”, you’re absolutely right and using Photo Mechanic is probably not for you. I still use Lightroom for just about everything else (organizing, collections, editing, printing etc…), but Photo Mechanic works great (for me at least) when I need to look through hundreds of photos and check sharpness, and overall quality of the photo, very quickly. Mainly because it draws full size views of the photos blazingly fast. I realized that I (and many other photographers out there) use a program called Photo Mechanic to look through our photos at times. It came as an idea after reading Scott Kelby’s post on his sports photography workflow. I’m doing a little bit of a different kind of video this time. And I can still remember vividly that moment over twenty years ago when I was playing for a prize of $6,000.00.Īfter making my move, I suddenly realized there was a serious flaw in my analysis, and my emotional response was so intense that I suddenly broke into a cold sweat. I can provide an example dating back over two decades ago, when I was a youthful and ambitious warrior aspiring to achieve the title of Chess Master. It’s interesting that all this energy is channeled on a playing field that is filled only with thought. It is absolutely necessary to energize this Fighter, because as the brain grows tired from all that hard thought, it is only an intense will-to-win that sustains the concentration required for a 5 hour test of skill. The Fighter wields the weapons of The Artist and The Scientist and directs them fiercely across the board with his brainpower and will to win. And without question it’s equally true that any aspiring player can use this model as a great vehicle to propel him along the rocky road towards mastery. In my own experience, I have discovered these three archetypes provide a highly insightful model for self-assessment. Having thoughtfully considered the differences between the artist and the scientist, we will add a final archetype called “the fighter.” This third character rounds out the three most fundamental styles of play: “ Artist, Scientist, and Fighter.” This knowledge of his own chess nature is the inspiration which leads the aspiring Master to design an opening repertoire that ensures his opponent ends up playing inside the laboratory he has thoughtfully designed. We can therefore, proclaim to the world that in chess an honest self-appraisal is a good thing, and the chessplayer can echo the words of Shakespeare with confidence, “t o thine own self be true.“ The Chess Master has learned to know himself, which positions he likes most and plays best. That’s because he has a clearer sense of exactly “what he should be looking at.” In fact, some studies have shown that in many positions The Master considers far fewer possibilities than his opponent of lesser skill. The configuration of analysis is deeper, but not as wide. This allows him to build a decision tree more like a picket fence than a thicket. The Scientist prefers positions that contain forcing variations where his opponent has fewer options. The Artist builds thickets of analysis filled with many branches and possibilities that are contained only by the boundaries of his imagination and the latent potential hidden within the position. In his classic dissertation “Think Like a Grandmaster,” Alexander Kotov provides us with two very strong metaphors that describe the two extremes of this spectrum. Since these two archetypes call upon different skills, it is true that the skills and thought processes that each Chess Master invokes are a unique blend determined by his fundamental personality and style of play over the board. The scientist loves positions that reward precision and deep analysis. The Scientist prefers fewer possibilities, and a higher degree of certainty upon the board. Positions which emphasize a player’s artistic temperament, contain a large number of possibilities, resist precise analysis, and require higher levels of assessment skills and abstract positional judgment. That’s because there are many truths contained within a single contest, and each Chess Master interprets the position according to his own psychology, and his own fighting style that has developed over a lifetime of analysis.īoth the art and science of this ancient contest exist simultaneously within all positions, and each element may be emphasized to different degrees, depending upon the exact configuration of pieces upon the board. And yet, at the same time, each Master may be equally correct, based upon his unique interpretation of the truth contained within the position. This is exactly why it often comes to pass that several strong masters study exactly the same position, and each one plays a different move. At the same time, it is clearly an art form which lends itself to high levels of creative thought and interpretation. Clearly, it is a science, subject to absolute laws which can be classified and studied. We will start by looking at the art and science of chess. Jesus, in turn, when described as a servant of God the word used in Greek is παῖς país (Acts 3:13, 26 4:27, 30), a word which can mean both young boy and house servant making it closer to Hebrew נַעַר na‘ar than to עֶבֶד ‘eḇeḏ. In the OT, people, such as Moses (Ex 14:31), Joshua (Josh 5:14), David (1Sam 23:9) or Salomon (1Kings 3:7) are also described as servants of the Lord with the same word עֶבֶד ‘eḇeḏ, and in the NT, St Paul (Acts 27:2 Romans 1:1 Ephesians 3:1), St James (Jas 1:1), St Peter (2Pet 1:1), St Jude (Jude 1), St John (Rev 1:1) and even the Virgin Mary (Lk 1:38, 48) are also referred to as servants of God with the word doúlos. In the Septuagint, an old Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament, διάκονος translates Hebrew נַעַר na‘ar whereas δοῦλος nearly always translates עֶבֶד ‘eḇeḏ. In in the Wedding at Cana (Jo 2:1-11), the assistants of the head-butler who were responsible for serving the wine are referred to in the Geek text as diā́konoi this is so because, although they are just servants, they were put in charge of a specific duty, whereas the doúloi are in there for any kind of work which needs doing. These two words describe different types of service: whereas doúlos, often translated as slave, describes a servant’s status in relation to his master, diā́konos describes someone in relation to his duties. In the Bible, there are several different words for servant, amongst them διάκονος and δοῦλος doúlos. Its original meaning is ‘servant’ and it was often used in the context of someone serving as an assistant in a temple, or as an aide to high officials, such as kings. diacon) refers to the first degree of the Church’s Holy Orders, it derives from the Ancient Greek term διάκονος diā́konos through Latin diaconus. There are plenty of other festivities to check out for those that don’t feel like stripping down to a loincloth in mid-winter, too. It’s one of several “naked festivals” held across Japan, with another held at Yotsukaido in Chiba prefecture, featuring men in loincloths fighting and carrying kids through mud as a method of exorcism. With its long heritage, the festival was also designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset in 2016. Their clothes just got in the way too, so they eventually did away with them and exchanged paper for wood, said Itano. But they realized that when they went to grab the paper it ripped. More and more villagers wanted those lucky paper talismans and the ritual grew in size. The festival evolved from a ritual that started 500 years ago during the Muromachi Period (1338-1573), when villagers competed to grab paper talismans, which were given out by a priest at the Saidaiji Kannonin Temple. Whoever succeeds is guaranteed a year of good fortune, according to legend. The 10,000 or so men, packed in like sardines, jostle with each other to get hold of one of the bundles and/or the two sticks. When the lights go out at 10 p.m., a priest throws 100 bundles of twigs and two lucky 20-centimeter-long shingi sticks into the crowd from a window four meters above. In the evening, the men spend an hour or two running around the temple grounds in preparation and purify themselves with freezing cold water, before cramming themselves into the main temple building. “We hope they will be able to keep the tradition alive in the future,” Mieko Itano, a spokeswoman from the Okayama tourism board, told CNN Travel. |
